Why You’ll Love Air Frying Your Chicken Breast!
Quick: Cooking chicken breast in the air fryer is a fairly quick process! All you need to do is ensure the chicken is of an even thickness, season the chicken, and then the air frying time is not long at all!
Easy: We essentially just have 3 steps in this recipe, so it’s excellent for beginner cooks to cook juicy and delicious chicken!
Meal prep-friendly: You can easily air fry plenty of chicken breasts for the week so that you’ve got a healthy protein source for your meals throughout the week! You can see how I do that in this video on how I typically meal prep my proteins for the week here, and you can also refer to the storage and reheating instructions I’ve outlined later on in this post.
Budget-friendly: Although prices are rising and it feels like everything is more expensive, a pack of chicken breast is still not too bad! Of course, I do suggest you purchase good quality chicken breast when possible not only for the best taste, but even if you can’t get the top tier local chicken breast, you can “pretty good” chicken breast for $13 for a pack of 3 for just under one kilogram (about a pound and a half). I do remember when these were $10, however! If you’re lucky, you can get these on sale, so I suggest you bulk-purchase chicken breasts when they are on sale, and freeze the packages until you’re ready to cook.
Customizable: You can simply season your chicken breasts, but you can also enhance them greatly with some spice blends! I’ve got some options further down below in this post, so be sure to check that out for inspiration!
Tools Needed to Make Air Fryer Chicken Breasts
Gloves: Handy to wear as you prep and season your chicken breasts so you don’t dirty your hands! Plus, this will make it more likely for you to really want to massage the seasoning well into your skin since you don’t have to touch the raw chicken directly!
Salt crock: A handy way to store your salt!
Air fryer: Obviously the most important tool here! This is how we’ll be cooking our chicken! I’m using the Cosori TurboBlaze 6 Quart air fryer. If you want to learn all about its settings and functionalities, in addition to my thoughts on the air fryer, then check out my full review here.
Chef’s knife: To cut the chicken breast. Make sure that your knife is sharp!
Cutting board: A clean work surface to cut the chicken breast and season the chicken.
Plastic wrap: Cover the chicken in plastic wrap to pound it down so you even out the thickness of the chicken breast.
Rolling pin: Ideally you would have a meat tenderizer, but if you don’t (like I don’t - believe it or not!), then a rolling pin is an excellent substitution! This is key to flatten out the chicken breast so that it’s even in thickness all around, which will ensure even cooking. Additionally, the thinner your chicken breast is, the quicker it will cook!
Olive oil dispenser: I like an olive oil dispenser to spray the oil on the chicken breast so that you’re not using as much oil as you would directly applying it on the chicken. I really would suggest you avoid the spray oils!
Meat thermometer: I’m using the Typhur Sync Gold Dual Smart wireless meat thermometer here to check the internal temperature of my chicken breast!
Tongs: To carefully place the chicken breasts in the air fryer basket and to flip them halfway through the cooking process.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Chicken Breast
Scroll to the bottom of this post for the FULL PRINTABLE RECIPE CARD, or press the “Jump to Recipe” button to save the recipe for later and to see all ingredients and their quantities. These ingredients will be for 2 medium-sized chicken breasts.
Chicken breast: I’m using boneless, skinless chicken breast.
Olive oil: Helps the chicken cook, adding juiciness and flavour.
Himalayan Pink Salt: My favourite salt choice.
Black pepper: Freshly ground black pepper would be the best, but my pepper mill broke! Alternatively, you can use ground pepper.
Prepping Juicy Air Fryer CHicken Breast
Pound Chicken Breast
Trim out the tenderloin piece behind the chicken breast and then place the chicken breasts in a Ziploc bag or between two plastic wraps. Then pound to an equal overall thickness using a mallet, meat tenderizer or a rolling pin.
Season Chicken Breast
I’ll be demoing this recipe with simple Himalayan pink salt and ground pepper on one chicken breast, and my homemade blackening seasoning on another.
To season well, sprinkle the salt and pepper from at least 1 foot from the the meat. I bet you have seen chefs season food the same way, its not just a fancy trick, its a technique that helps ensure the meat is seasoned evenly. There is nothing worse than biting into a chunk of salt! Add olive oil, rub the seasoning and then flip, and season and add oil on the other side of the chicken breast.
Questions You May Have On How to Cook The Best CHicken Breast in the AIr Fryer
What is The Secret To the Best Air Fryer Chicken Breast?
The secret to preventing dry chicken breast is to cook based on temperature, and not on time! There is actually no magical time to cooking your chicken breast, as there are so many variables when cooking chicken breast. For instance, the size of the chicken breast, the cooking method, and the thickness of the chicken breast all are factors that will affect the cooking time. However, to achieve chicken breast at an internal temperature at 165 degrees Fahrenheit will be your key to success!
Do You Need to Preheat the Air Fryer?
Usually, yes - especially for foods like chicken breast. Preheating helps the food start cooking immediately, improves browning and crisping, and keeps cook times accurate, similar to a conventional oven. While some air fryers heat up quickly and may not require preheating for every food, lean proteins like chicken breast benefit greatly from starting in a hot air fryer, helping seal in moisture and prevent drying out.
What Temperature Will We Air Fry Chicken Breasts?
We’ll be air frying the chicken breasts at 375 Degrees Fahrenheit.
Does Chicken Breast Need to Marinate Before Air Frying?
No, you don’t have to marinate the chicken breast. Seasoning chicken breast with your favourite spice blend is enough to add lots of flavour! Plus, if you’re going to be using chicken breast as a base in another dish, then you’ll actually want to keep the flavourings as minimal as possible. Of course, feel free to marinate your chicken breast if you would like! There are plenty of marinades you could choose from, such as Italian-Herb, Mojo Marinade, Chicken Tikka, or the saffron-yogurt marinade for Joojeh Kebabs.
How Long To Air Fry Chicken Breast?
The most accurate measure is the internal temperature as read by a meat thermometer, which makes time a non factor. But if you are not using it the cook time will depend on a number of variables! It could take about 6 minutes to up to 12, depending on how many chicken breasts you’re cooking, their size, and if you’re cooking from frozen or not.
How Do You Know the Chicken Has Cooked?
If you’ve got a meat thermometer such as the Typhur Smart Sync one, then this is excellent because you’ll receive a notification directly to your smart phone once the chicken breast is done cooking, which will be a couple of degrees before the safe internal temperature of internal temperature of 165 F! Carryover cooking will finish cooking the inside all the way up to 165 F without you having to guess. I really didn’t have to do anything other than to monitor my phone. You get a notification when your food is about 5 minutes away from being finished as a heads up. Then, you’ll receive another notification that your food is ready, and it’s time to remove it from the heat so that it doesn’t over-cook! You’ll have one more notification when the food is done resting.
With the Typhur thermometer, it will actually tell you to remove the chicken at about 162 degrees Fahrenheit. This automatically accounts for the carryover cook time. The chicken will continue cooking, and it’s key to let it rest so the juices don’t drip right off the cutting board!
After you’ve allowed the chicken to rest for 3-5 minutes, you can slice, serve and enjoy!
Can I Air Fry Chicken Breasts without Olive Oil?
You can, but it’s not recommended. Chicken breast is very lean, and a small amount of oil helps create a thin, even coating that promotes consistent cooking, better browning, and prevents seasonings from burning or drying out.
Can You AIr Fry chicken Breasts from frozen?
As with anything, technically you CAN, but it’s not recommended. You actually can’t do most of the steps outlined here with a frozen chicken breast! For instance, you can’t pound the chicken breast to an even thickness because it will be rock solid. Furthermore, you won’t be able to properly season the chicken since the seasonings won’t stick to the chicken, due to the ice on it. There is also too much moisture for the seasonings to stick on the chicken. In addition, the oil would also slide off the chicken breast.
With that being said, technically you could just put your chicken breast in the air fryer directly from frozen, but will it be super juicy and delicious? Probably not!
Can These Instructions be Applied to Bone-in Chicken Breast?
Yes, you can follow the same steps for bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts. When checking for doneness, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the breast without touching the bone, as bone-in chicken takes slightly longer to cook and the bone can give a false reading.
Is Air Fryer Chicken Breast Healthy?
Yes, it definitely is! Chicken breast is one of the best sources of protein, where a 3.5 ounce (85 g) portion of cooked chicken breast contains 128 calories with 26 grams of protein, and just under 3 grams of fat! Chicken breast is an excellent lean protein choice for those who are looking to get a large amount of protein in a serving. Protein is key to build and maintain muscle mass, and can strengthen bones.
Furthermore, chicken breast is a good source of selenium, phosphorous, vitamin B6, and niacin. These vitamins and minerals are key for thyroid function and producing DNA, in addition to playing an essential role for cellular functioning.
All in all, chicken breast is well-known for being a staple in a healthy diet, so you can’t go wrong with it! While it’s demonized for being boring and plan, I hope this air fryer recipe will change your mind on that, because you definitely can achieve juicy and flavourful chicken breast to incorporate in your weekly meal plan! Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them!
Uneven Thickness:
If a chicken breast isn’t an even thickness, the thinner parts will cook faster than the thicker center. This often leads to dry, overcooked edges by the time the middle is fully cooked.
Fix: Lightly pound the chicken breast to an even thickness before cooking to ensure it cooks evenly and stays juicy throughout.
Not seasoning properly:
Seasoning chicken breast haphazardly leads to uneven flavour—some bites will be well seasoned while others taste bland.
Fix: Season both sides evenly and sprinkle the seasoning from a slight height to ensure better distribution before adding the chicken to the air fryer.
Not Adding Olive Oil:
Chicken breast is very lean, and skipping oil can cause spices to burn and prevent even cooking.
Fix: Lightly coat the chicken with olive oil (or another neutral oil of your choice). This helps the seasonings adhere, promotes even browning, and improves overall texture.
Cooking Until the Chicken “Looks Done”:
Relying on appearance alone often leads to overcooked, dry chicken.
Fix: Use a meat thermometer and cook until the internal temperature reaches doneness. This is the most reliable way to ensure juicy chicken every time.
Not Letting the Chicken Rest:
Even perfectly cooked chicken can turn dry if it’s cut into immediately.
Fix: Let the chicken rest for a 3-5 minutes after cooking so the juices redistribute, keeping the meat tender and moist.

Storing and Reheating Instructions
How to Store
All you need to do is transfer the cooked chicken breasts into an airtight container, and keep it in the fridge. Cooked chicken will stay good in the fridge for about 3 to 4 days.
Freezing
You can certainly keep your cooked chicken breasts in the freezer if you can’t finish them within the 3 to 4 days outlined above. This really makes air fryer chicken breast an incredible meal prep option. Store your cooked chicken breasts in the freezer for about 3 to 4 months to avoid the possibility of freezer burn developing.
Reheating
The best choice is in the air fryer, of course! If reheating refrigerated chicken breast, place the chicken in the basket of your air fryer and select the “Reheat” for about 5 minutes, or until entirely warmed through.
While I do recommend you thaw frozen chicken breast overnight for best results, if you really want to reheat frozen chicken breast, then it will take longer for the chicken to thaw and reheat in the air fryer.
