Easy and Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas Recipe
I’ve not eaten too many chickpea dishes in my day, and unfortunately I need to mostly blame my mom for this! My mom has made some really tasty dishes, such as Mom’s Grilled Cheese, Aloo Bhindi (potatoes and okra) or Masoor Dal, but something that she’d frequently mess up is cooking chickpeas! That being said, making some good chickpeas is both a science and an art, but when they are cooked perfectly, they’re so awesome! My favourite Indian chickpea dishes are Homestyle Chole (chickpeas), or Delhi-Style Chole, the street-style version of chickpea curry. In fact, having Delhi-style with bhatura, deep-fried puffy breads, is an amazing combo that I encourage you all to have at some point!
Today we’ll be doing something a bit different with our air fryer roasted chickpeas. These chickpeas are a tasty and healthy little snack that are packed with protein and fibre! What’s better is that air frying makes the process super quick and simple, as you’ll soon see for yourself! I’ve been snacking on these chickpeas every day since making them, and I’m sure once you try this recipe out, these air fried roasted chickpeas will instantly become one of your new favourite snacks, too!

Common Mistakes You May Be Making When Making Air Fryer Chickpeas
Too much moisture: If there’s too much moisture from the chickpeas, then this will delay the cooking time since the water will need to be cooked off. I always say in my air fryer recipes that moisture is the enemy! This water will create a coating on the surface of the chickpeas, and the circulating air in the air fryer will try to cook off the water, which will result instead in teaming the chickpeas compared to of roast them.
To prevent this, you really need to pat the chickpeas dry with a paper towel to before air frying to ensure no extra moisture is on them.
Not adding olive oil: Olive oil protects the exterior of the chickpeas from over-cooking, and it will also prevent the spices from burning on the chickpeas. Plus, olive oil helps you achieve that desirable golden brown colour, and gets you that super crunch factor!
Overcrowding the basket: Are you planning on making a large batch of these air fryer roasted chickpeas to have an on-the-go quick snack for the week? Well, before you get excited and just dump your chickpeas into the air fryer basket, you need to hold up! Air fryers circulate hot air in a small space. If you’re making more than a layer of chickpeas that is wet and not oiled, you’re creating pockets where some chickpeas are getting crispy, while some are getting soggy or even burnt. The result will just be uneven chickpeas, and that’s not very desirable for snacking!
Trust me, when I had the bad chickpeas I made just for demonstration purposes, I really could identify which chickpeas were good from the bad batch and which ones were either soft or burnt. The chickpeas were edible, but not very pleasant to snack on!
Seasoning the chickpeas too early: Certain spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika hold water. If you’re seasoning your chickpeas with these spices, they’ll hold water onto the surface of the chickpeas, which will delay the chickpeas from getting crispy.
Pair this with wet chickpeas, chickpeas that aren’t oiled, and were overcrowded in your air fryer basket and you’re really in for a recipe for disaster! Instead, we’ll be seasoning the chickpeas after they’ve finished roasting in the air fryer, right before serving.
Troubleshooting Tips: Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas
Why are my chickpeas not crispy?
Make sure your chickpeas are as dry as possible before cooking—pat them thoroughly with a clean paper towel. Crowding the air fryer basket can trap moisture, so give them space to crisp up. If needed, cook in smaller batches!
How long do I cook chickpeas in the air fryer?
We’ll air fry the chickpeas for 15 minutes at 390°F does the trick. Ensure to shake the basket halfway through to cooking time to ensure that they cook evenly. If after 15 minutes you taste the chickpeas and find that they could still be crispier, air fry for a few minutes longer and check again.
Are roasted chickpeas okay for diabetics?
Yes! Thanks to their low glycemic index and fiber content, roasted chickpeas can be a smart, satisfying snack that helps maintain steady blood sugar levels.
My chickpeas are sticking together—what now?
Toss chickpeas with a little extra olive oil and seasoning before air frying to help keep them separate. Also, stirring or shaking the basket mid-cook breaks up any clumps.

Chickpeas: You can use either canned chickpeas or dry chickpeas. If you’re using dried chickpeas, you’ll have to cook them first. I like to use my Instant Pot for this, and you can learn how to cook dried chickpeas here. Make sure you soak them prior to cooking!
Olive oil: You need to drizzle on some olive oil before cooking the chickpeas to ensure that the outside of the chickpeas get crispy and golden brown, while ensuring that the insides don’t overcook causing them to get soggy.
Himalayan Pink Salt: The salt of choice I always use.
Other seasonings: I’m using my homemade Taco Seasoning here, but feel free to use any spice blend or seasoning of your choice! I’ll list some other ideas to inspire you later on in this post.

How to Serve Air Fryer Crispy Chickpeas
As a healthy snack: I’ve been munching on these on their own and they’re the perfect healthy snack! I love salty snacks - chips especially - but I don’t buy chips in the house or else I’d buy the whole thing! All the salt really doesn’t make me feel good, so I avoid chips unless I’m at parties. However, I really found that eating this crispy and flavourful air fryer chickpeas gave me the satisfaction I get from chips but without the excess sodium and with some real health benefits!
In salads: You can use these chickpeas as a crunchy salad topper, too!
What To Do With Leftover Chickpeas?
Your air fryer roasted chickpeas can definitely stay good in the fridge for some time! Ensure that the roasted chickpeas have fully cooled down, and then transfer them into an airtight container. If you notice they’ve turned a bit soft over time, then the air fryer is really handy here! Simply put them in the basket and use the reheat setting until they’ve reached the desired crunchiness.
