Banana Mocha Frappe Recipe

Summer in Canada just goes by way too fast! We really have to make the most out of it here, and while I love the fall season for cozy hot drinks like a S’mores Hot Chocolate or - of course - a Pumpkin Spice Latte. Now, I’m someone who doesn’t mind a cold drink any time of year, but there’s something just so satisfying when you drink an ice-cold beverage in the blazing heat. Sadly, those days are numbered at the time of writing this, but for now I’ll still go strong! Some of my favourite cold drinks are cold coffee!

I have to say that I really don’t have much of a morning routine, nor do I “need” coffee in the morning. If you’ve followed me for awhile, you know that my favourite coffee beverage is the simple Cafe Mocha. While I’m not dependent on caffeine, a mocha will always make my day better! Since it’s been quite hot out and I’ve been craving cold coffee and been loving frappes, I thought about throwing a banana into the mix! This frappe can double up as a breakfast or just to be enjoyed as a cold snack if desired! It’s super fast to make once you have your chocolate sauce on hand, and it’s super tasty!

As I mention in my Make Cooking Fun! free guide to spark your creativity in the kitchen, using what you have can lead you to discovering new recipes you’ve never tried before! As you’ll see in the ingredients list below, this recipe uses some pretty common household ingredients that you most likely already have!

Let’s get brewing and blending!

Is This Banana Mocha Frappe Healthy?

Well, I like to think so! As you’ll see in the video, perhaps the way I made the frappe here was a bit more for a deluxe treat. However, if you want to make this for an every day recipe, you certainly can! You can simply add less chocolate sauce in the blender and to line the cup. Additionally, skip out on the whipped cream and additional chocolate on top to save on the sugar and heavy cream! If you want to lighten the drink up more, you can use a lower-calorie milk, such as 1% or 2% milk. You can even use almond milk or unsweetened oat milk for plant-based lower-calorie alternatives. However, keep in mind that I cannot guarantee that the texture and taste will be similar to using whole milk. If you drink cow’s milk, then this is what I recommend!

Can I use Instant Coffee?

Of course you can! Actually, when I make this frappe for the morning, this is what I typically do. Of course it’s a lot easier to throw in a tablespoon of instant coffee, so this is a great choice if you’re impatient or in a rush in the morning.

However, if you really want to treat yourself and get a really strong coffee flavour, then I recommend that you brew your favourite coffee prior to actually making the Banana Mocha Frappe. If you use a French press, you’ll get an even stronger flavour. No French press? No problem! A standard coffee machine will work just fine. Got an espresso machine? That will definitely get you the best results!

Do I Need to Freeze the bananas?

Technically you don’t need to freeze the bananas to make this drink. Again, I usually don’t take the time to think about this step, and I typicall add room-temperature bananas. However, I’ll admit that I do recommend that you do freeze your bananas for best results. The frozen bananas just make the frappe even creamier and sweeter, so it’s worth doing that extra prep step!

If you’re using bananas that are at room temperature, you can add more ice to make the drink as cold as it would be with the bananas.

For the Chocolate Sauce

For the Banana Mocha Frappe

  • Bananas: Frozen bananas aren’t mandatory, but they’re definitely ideal and that’s my recommendation for the best results!

  • Ice: Ice cubes to get the drink cold and thick.

  • Milk: I’m using whole milk to get the creamiest and richest results.

  • Whipped cream: Store-bought whipped cream in an aerosol can or you can make your own! If you want even more chocolate goodness, then check out my Chocolate Whipped Cream recipe! If you want to really go all out, I recommend a whipped cream dispenser for perfectly thick coffee-shop quality whipped cream. If you’re looking for information on how to purchase and use a whipped cream dispenser, I have a full guide here!

  • Chocolate syrup: You can follow my chocolate sauce recipe or use a store-bought chocolate sauce to save time.

  • Coffee: Instant coffee or brewed coffee. I recommend brewed coffee or espresso.

  • Madagascar bourbon vanilla bean paste: I really love this stuff for some extra flavour! Madagascar bourbon vanilla bean paste is definitely a premium item, and I find it has so much more aroma than regular vanilla extract. If you don’t have this then no worries! Simply double the amount of vanilla extract that you would use for Madagascar vanilla bean paste to get a similar vanilla flavour.

  • Honey: Or your favourite sweetener. You can use simple table sugar, but for more natural options you can try brown sugar, cane sugar, agave syrup or maple syrup. Splenda or Stevia are great sugar-free options as well.

How to make Banana Mocha Frappe

In a blender/food processor add the milk, brewed coffee or espresso (or instant coffee), bananas, honey, Madagascar bourbon vanilla bean paste and chocolate sauce.

Blend well on high speed until the ice is completely crushed.

Line the cup with the desired amount of chocolate sauce.

Pour the smoothie into two glasses and top with whipped cream, if desired.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

TIPS FOR A Delicious Banana Mocha Frappe

  • Ideally, freeze your bananas for them to release their sweetness and to have a smooth drink.

  • The amount of ice is important to consider to get the right final consistency in the drink. If the bananas are at room temperature, add extra ice.

  • Use double the amount of vanilla extract for Madagascar bourbon vanilla bean paste if you do not have the latter.

  • Heat the chocolate sauce so it pours and applies easier when you line the cup.

  • Avoiding over-blending the drink to prevent excessive foam. If you do get extra foam due to blending, you can spoon that out.

  • Blend at a high speed to ensure a creamy smoothie.

  • Use a whipped cream dispenser to get a rich experience just like at a coffee shop.

  • Enjoy right away or else the drink will separate!
