Easy Banana Chocolate Chip Overnight Oats are creamy, healthy, and ready in minutes. Prep the night before for a delicious grab-and-go breakfast you will love every morning.
Overnight oats are what I consider to be the queen of all oatmeal. The taste, ease of preparation and texture is far superior to oatmeal made any other way. I would come out and say that it would also make for a delicious dessert if you are up for it! Not going to lie, I’ve made overnight oats for dessert quite a few times and it’s tons of fun! Overnight oats are light and nutritious, but they definitely can serve as a dessert for breakfast or just as a dessert! Skip the pudding and make these overnight oats!
Overnight oats just rock. All you gotta do is dump in the core ingredients into a bowl and add in your favourite mix-ins. The creativity with these can be endless! Then throw your mixture into the fridge and finish them off with any extra toppings, if desired, when you’re ready to eat. The preparation is so simple but the results are extraordinary!
I’d also like to mention that overnight oats are a perfect option to prep breakfasts for the week! You could prep the same base recipe and add in whatever your heart desires in the morning. No excuse to leave the house hungry when you’re in a pinch for time in the morning! I know I’ve avoided tons of stress not deciding what to cook for breakfast in the morning or forcing myself to cook when I’m too tired. Overnight oats can save lives for sure!
Why Try These Banana and Chocolate Overnight Oats
Banana and chocolate chip overnight oats are the solution to a quick breakfast! You'll love the sweetness from the bananas, and be sure to load up the chocolate chips! Because everyone loves chocolate and bananas. This recipe is a perfect way to use rolled oats and enjoy something healthy and sweet. Enjoy overnight oats hot or cold. I personally prefer overnight oats cold. I find them very refreshing on a hot summer’s day actually!
Overnight Oat Tips
Anybody can make a delicious overnight oats based upon their favourite milk, fruits, sweetener or treats from your pantry. All you need is a basic skeleton recipe to start out your canvas and let your imagination dictate the rest.
The chia seeds work their magic and make this breakfast so creamy that the breakfast is almost like a banana chocolate pudding! The more milk you add, the more liquidy it’ll be. But chia seeds are a must with pretty much all of my overnight oats recipes! These little guys really make the difference in the finished product!
In these chocolate banana overnight oats, I’ve added some Greek yogurt with the milk to get the maximum creaminess out of the oats. Greek yogurt is superior to regular yogurt in this case because of how thick it is. Regular yogurt will be runny. Of course if that’s all you have, feel free to try it out, but I would strongly recommend you use Greek yogurt!
Greek yogurt is also an awesome ingredient in these oats because it boosts the protein content, and it’s great for your gut health. For all the deliciousness, who doesn’t love the bonus of treating your body well when you’ve got a busy morning ahead!
Time to get these super yummy overnight oats ready! Begin by creating your base, adding the oats, Greek yogurt, milk, chia seeds, and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl.
Using a whisk, mix all the ingredients until you have a smooth consistency and everything is well combined.
Now, add some chocolate chips.
And a few banana slices.
Mash the banana with a fork, then use a spatula to gently fold in the chocolate chips in the overnight oat mixture. Stir in the bananas.
Now, transfer the oat mixture to a serving bowl or a mason jar. If using a mason jar, seal with a lid. If using a serving bowl, cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight, or at least for 4-6 hours.
In the morning, top with more banana slices.
Add some more chocolate chips!
The final touch is a drizzle of honey.
Now grab a spoon and enjoy these delicious banana chocolate chip overnight oats for a nutritious start to the day!
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do overnight oats need to sit?▼
Overnight — that's the whole idea. Mix everything, seal the jar or bowl, and refrigerate for at least several hours (ideally overnight) so the oats and chia soften into a thick, creamy, spoonable breakfast.
What's the oats-to-liquid ratio?▼
Equal parts: about ⅔ cup of rolled oats to ⅔ cup of milk, plus ¼ cup of Greek yogurt for creaminess and protein and a tablespoon of chia seeds to thicken. That balance gives you oats that are creamy, not soupy.
Can I use a dairy-free milk?▼
Yes — any milk works here, dairy or plant-based, so use whatever you like. The Greek yogurt adds extra creaminess and protein, but you can swap in a dairy-free yogurt to keep the whole thing plant-based.
Why mash the banana into the oats?▼
Mashing half a banana right into the mixture sweetens and flavours the entire jar without any added sugar. Save the other half to slice over the top in the morning, along with chocolate chips and a drizzle of honey.
