Long time followers of the blog may know that I love to explore a new international cuisine at least once every month! One stop that I’ve never made is Nigeria, and of course I’ve had to make some Nigerian meat pies!

A key component for the meat mixture to have that amazing flavor is this spice blend! As I mention in my NEW motivational guide to get inspired with new cooking creations, The Chef’s Manifesto, building a meal based on flavor profiles is an excellent way to venture off into new dishes. You will most definitely unlock so much deliciousness with this Nigerian curry powder spice blend! Similar to the Indian curry powder, I’ve learned that the Nigerian curry powder has some deep aromatics. Turmeric is a prominent spice to give foods that yellow pigment. What’s key about this spice blend is that it’s focused on warm and earthly aromatics and not intense heat. There’s no chili powder present here, so don’t fall for the misconception that this is a spicy mix!

How to Use It

As I’ve mentioned at the beginning of this post, the reason I made this was for my air fryer Nigerian meat pie recipe. However, this curry powder is a staple in Nigerian cuisine. One iconic dish that uses this spice blend is Jollof rice, and it would also be excellent for other Nigerian-style fried rice dishes. Furthermore, you can use this spice blend for marinades for chicken and beef, as a flavor base for soups and stews, and use it for Nigerian-style curries.

Storing Homemade Curry Powder

Store your Nigerian curry powder in an airtight container or jar in a cool, dark spot, such as in your spice cabinet in your pantry. It will be the most potent within 3 months, and I wouldn’t suggest you keep it longer than 6 months.
