At the time of writing this, Christmas is fast approaching. Are you scrambling for some appetizer ideas? I don’t blame you! You could just go the easy route and purchase some frozen hors d’oeuvres or make the typical appetizers. But you’re probably here because you want to be creative!

Look no further! This Jalapeno and Cheese Samosa recipe will totally be gone in a flash at your next family get-together! If you know me, I love my samosas! My favourite samosa is the classic North Indian Potato Samosas, but I also really enjoy my Paneer Jalfrezi Samosas and my Chicken Keema Samosas. Whatever your filling, samosas are the ultimate Indian appetizer, but why not add a Christmas flair to them?

On my YouTube channel (by the way, please hit subscribe if you’re not already! I love to share the video versions of my recipes as well as written so you can follow along and get the complete experience to ensure you’ve got all the steps nailed to succeed with the recipes!), when I was first sharing samosa recipes, I was requested quite well in advance to do holiday samosas when that time would come. Well, the time has come! Gee, side note, but hasn’t this year just flown by? How are there only two weeks of December left?

This will be one of three Christmas samosa recipes I plan on sharing! You can watch the video at the bottom of this post to watch how to make this samosa and the other two! We’ll also be making Mashed Potato Samosas and Spinach & Cream Cheese Samosas! You could make your favourite or all three samosas to serve your guests! These samosas are make-ahead-friendly and leftover-friendly, but I don’t think you’ll have any leftovers!

What do you like to serve as appetizers for the holidays? Any fusion recipes? Let me know in the comments!

For the Jalapeño Corn & Cheddar Filling

  • Cream cheese
  • Jalapeños
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Corn
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Samosas

  • Phyllo pastry
  • Water
  • All-purpose flour
  • Butter
  • Peanut oil, for frying

How to Make Delicious Jalapeno and Cheese Samosas

For the Filling

  1. In a bowl, combine cream cheese, jalapeño, cheddar, corn, salt and pepper and mix well to combine.

For the Glue

  1. Whisk together 1/4 Cup of flour and water as needed to make a thick paste.

To Prepare the Samosas

  1. Separate the phyllo sheet so that you have 2 thin sheets, a bottom layer and a top layer. Cover the top sheet with a damp kitchen/paper towel. Brush the bottom sheet with butter and then cover with the top sheet.
  2. Cut the sheets with a sharp knife to 2.5-3 inch thick strips.
  3. Working with one strip at a time place a tablespoon of jalapeno corn filling on the bottom of the strip.
  4. Fold to form a triangle and gently press to spread the stuffing. Then, fold again to layer and form another triangle until you are at the top.
  5. Seal the pastry with 1/4 tsp or so of the flour and water glue and repeat the same for the remaining portions

To Cook the Samosas

  1. To bake, preheat oven to 425 F and brush the tops of the samosas with butter. Bake for 12-17 minutes or until crisp golden brown.
  2. To fry, preheat oil to around 350 F and fry for 5-7 minutes or until crisp golden brown.
  3. Enjoy hot!

Serving Suggestions

Of course I’ll always recommend to serve your samosas with some chutney! My favourite chutney to enjoy is Cilantro-Mint Chutney, but a Sweet & Tangy Tamarind Chutney would also go very well with these! You could also dip your samosas in ketchup, which I love to do! Hot sauces and sour cream would nicely complement these fusion samosas too. For beverages, I think a cold Mango Lassi would be great to offset the heat from the jalapeños!

Can I make my own samosa dough?▼

Sure, why not! I have plenty of samosa recipes where I make my dough from scratch! I decided to use phyllo dough here to show that you can conveniently make some delicious samosas during the holiday season. I’ve seen other samosa recipes using phyllo pastry and I had honestly never done it before, so I was curious to try out the method myself and to taste test. Well, phyllo dough samosas totally have my seal of approval! Sometimes we just can’t do it all, especially if you’ve got a full menu to make. This shortcut is totally fine!

If you want to make your own samosa dough, check out my Aloo Samosa recipe!

Can I bake these samosas?▼

Yes why not! If you watch the video below, you’ll see that I’ve shown how to bake and fry them! You can decide which cooking method you’d like to do based on your and your guests preference! In fact, you could

To bake your samosas, preheat your oven to 425 F. You can bake your samosa triangle or you could add the filling in an entire sheet of phyllo pastry! Simply roll out the entire sheet of phyllo pastry. Add the filling in the pastry and roll it up. Brush with butter, cut some slits on the pastry itself to make cutting it easier and bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Cut with a serrated knife and serve hot.

Can I make Jalapeno and cheese samosas ahead of time?▼

Yes, you sure can if you’re going to make a large batch for a dinner party! The spinach cream cheese mixture can easily be made ahead of time and stores well in the refrigerator. You could make that and thaw your phyllo dough a few hours before you’re going to cook the samosas. Then, you can then fill your samosas and fry them right on the spot. Otherwise, if you want to get the entire cooking process out of the way, you can reheat them in the oven.

Storing Leftover Jalapeño Cheese Samosas

I don’t know how there could be leftovers, but if there are then no worries! Store any leftover samosas in an airtight container in the fridge. They will stay fresh in the fridge for 3-4 days.

As for freezing, I wouldn’t recommend you freeze these Corn Jalapeno and Cheese Samosas because the phyllo pastry won’t thaw properly. Since the phyllo pastry is already frozen, you cannot refreeze it. The texture of the pastry is very thin and flaky, so condensation from thawing will turn your samosa to mush. Furthermore, the filling probably won’t maintain its texture and flavor after it is thawed.

How to Reheat Jalapeño cheddar Samosas▼

Phyllo wont react well to reheating in the microwave. If you don’t have an oven or an air fryer, enjoy it cold!

To keep the outside of the samosa nice and crispy, the best methods would be to air fry or reheat in the oven! To reheat in the air fryer, heat for about 2-3 minutes at 350 F. To reheat in the oven, also set your oven to 350 F and heat for about 5 to 10 minutes.

In my opinion, the air fryer would definitely be the best method because there’s no preheating, it’s convenient, and your samosas will be crispy outside!
