What Is Avocado Lime Crema?

Avocado Lime Crema is a condiment used as a sauce or for dipping. A traditional lime crema is made with heavy cream and buttermilk to produce a thick and tangy condiment, but the avocado version that we’ll be making today uses avocados to yield our luscious condiment. The addition of garlic, cilantro and lime juice work together to provide acidity to balance out the rich avocado.

Dietary Information for This Avocado Lime Crema Recipe

This Avocado Lime Crema recipe is…

  • Gluten-free
  • Vegetarian
What’s the Difference Between Avocado Lime Crema and Guacamole?▼

While both of these condiments are avocado-based, they are quite different! If you check out my go-to Classic Guacamolerecipe, it’s not made in a blender. Instead, it’s made by mashing avocado with other elements, including tomatoes, onions, garlic, cilantro, and lime juice. While the avocado, cilantro, and lime juice are in common, crema does not contain onions and tomatoes. Additionally, since we are mashing everything together, you get a chunky texture. On the other hand, since we’re blending the ingredients for avocado lime crema will be of a smooth and creamy consistency, as the name suggests. Also, since crema is cream-based, we’ve got our sour cream in there to achieve that, while guacamole does not have any creamy element!

Can I Make Avocado Lime Crema Recipe Healthier?▼

While I wouldn’t describe this Avocado Lime Crema as unhealthy, there are some swaps you can make to tweak the ingredients in this recipe to fit your dietary preferences. Here are some ideas:

  • High protein: Substitute the sour cream to use entirely Greek yogurt to boost the protein content.
  • Low in fat: You can use a reduced-fat sour cream, or use 0% fat Greek yogurt to reduce the fat and bump up the protein.
  • Vegan: The only dairy product in this recipe is the sour cream. You can use a dairy-free sour cream to make this recipe vegan, or use a dairy-free Greek yogurt to make this avocado crema high in protein and low in fat.
What Does Avocado Lime Crema Taste Like?▼

The best and simplest way to describe it would be a creamy version of guacamole. Which is a great thing since guacamole is amazing.

How Do I Prevent my Avocado Lime Crema from Being Runny?▼
  • Use thick, full fat ingredients for the yogurt and sour cream to give the crema more body and thickness and ensure the avocados are firm but ripe.
  • Use the directed amount of lime juice to ensure you get the right final consistency.
  • Refrigerating for 30–60 minutes before serving helps it firm up slightly and makes the flavors meld.
How Can I Prevent Avocado Lime Crema From Turning Brown?▼

Oxidation is the main culprit that can cause the avocado lime crema to turn brown. Here are a few things you can do to prevent or slowdown this process.

  • Use fresh lime juice instead of bottled - fresh lime juice gives the crema a better anti-oxidant effect.
  • Air is the enemy. Press plastic wrap directly on the surface of the crema to minimize oxidation.
  • Some chefs tend to drizzle a thin layer of olive oil over the top before sealing — it creates an oxygen barrier.
  • Even with best practices, avocado crema is best fresh. After day 2, browning and flavor decline are hard to avoid.
Can I Add Some Heat to my Avocado Crema?▼

You definitely can! If you want to add a spicy kick to your avocado lime crema, you can add 1-2 Thai green chilies, serrano chillies or a sliced jalapeño. You could even add in some red chilli flakes if you would like.

All ingredients and the instructions to save for later can be found by scrolling to the bottom of this post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card or by pressing the “Jump to Recipe” button. You will also be able to scale the recipe based on how many portions of avocado lime crema you’re looking to make so that you can make either a small amount for a single meal or have plenty to enjoy a week’s worth of Mexican delights!

Avocado lime crema ingredients arranged on a wooden board: halved avocados, lime wedges, fresh cilantro, sour cream, and seasonings.
  • Avocado: For best results, use the ripest avocados possible. I recommend you purchase your avocados a few days in advance so that they have some time to ripen!
  • Lime juice: You can use freshly squeezed lime juice or lime juice from a bottle, depending on what you already have on hand!
  • Greek yogurt: Adds extra thickness and a little bit of tanginess to the avocado crema. If you don’t have Greek yogurt, then no problem! You could use entirely sour cream for this base.
  • Sour cream: Full fat sour cream will give you the creamiest product.
  • Cilantro: I really love cilantro, so we’re not going to skimp out on it here! I recommend getting a bunch of loose fresh cilantro since it’s cheaper, and we’ll really use a fair amount! No need to remove the stems since we’ll be adding the cilantro directly into the blender.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic cloves. No need to mince them since we’ll be adding them to a blender.
  • Salt and pepper: Season as needed to taste.

Tips for Making Super Creamy Avocado Lime Crema

  • Use perfectly ripe but firm avocados. They should be soft but not mushy. Avoid any with brown spots inside — those create bitter, muddy flavors and affect smoothness.
  • Season, taste and adjust as needed. Salt enhances creaminess and flavor — start small, then taste and adjust. Add a touch of smoked paprika for a subtle savory edge if you like.
  • A splash of olive oil can make it even smoother and richer, while some lime zest can brighten the sauce even further.
  • Letting the crema chill for 30–60 minutes before serving helps it set and improves flavor balance.
How to Store Lime Crema▼

All you need to do is transfer the avocado crema into a mason jar or in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. Due to the avocados and garlic in here, I suggest that you keep it in the fridge for no longer than 2-3 days. The crema will start browning on the surface after 2 days due to oxidation. While edible, it may not appear the most pleasant - rest assured the layer below the surface should still be bright green.

Unfortunately, you can’t freeze your avocado lime crema as the texture will become grainy once defrosted. So make sure you’ve got lots of tasty meals planned so that you can use this sauce! Continue reading for recipe inspiration!

Ways to Serve with This Avocado Lime Crema Recipe

There are so many ways to enjoy your Avocado Lime Crema! Of course, you can pair this with Mexican-inspired recipes, such as:

  • Restaurant-Style Baja Fish Tacos
  • Loaded Beef Tostadas
  • Beef Burrito Bowls
  • Crispy Chicken and Shrimp Tacos
  • BBQ Chicken Quesadillas
  • Instant Pot Beef Chilli

However, there’s no need to limit yourself! Avocado crema would be so delicious with eggs, such as on top of boiled eggs, deviled eggs, in an omelette, or on top of scrambled eggs. I can also see this being incredible as a topping over my Indian fusion Paneer Pakora Nachos! You can also incorporate this in sandwiches and wraps as a spread, such as in a Breakfast Bagel BELT, Spicy Mexican-Style Shrimp Wrap, Tandoori Chicken Sandwich, or even in your Breakfast Burritos!
