Anadi's Classic American Cheeseburger

Burgers go hand in hand with classic American cooking. This recipe is my take on the classic American burger, grilled to perfection at home with melted cheese, pickles, ketchup, mustard, served on top of my homemade burger buns. This recipe results in the most juicy and flavourful burger and I can't wait to get your opinion on this recipe! Enjoy!

Makes 2 large burgers

  • 300 g ground beef
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 small finely chopped onion
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • Splash of Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 burger buns
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Pickle slices
  • Cheddar cheese slices
  • 2-3 tbsp oil
  • 4 bamboo skewers
  1. Combine all ingredients until the Dijon mustard into a bowl and mix well to make the patty mix.
  2. Lightly oil your hands and take half of the mix and form it into a ball while compressing it, and then flatten it out into a thick disc and neatly tug the edges to form the patties. Repeat with the other half.
  3. Heat a grill pan/sauce pan on medium heat for the burgers.
  4. Lightly oil the pan and place the patty on the pan. With the back of a spoon/your finger, make a deep indent in the centre of the patty. This is going to help prevent the patty from puffing up into a ball. Cook for about 4-5 minutes.
  5. In the meanwhile, heat another pan on medium heat to toast the burger buns.
  6. Flip the patty and put a lid on and cook on the other side for 3-4 minutes or until cooked thoroughly. Note: If you want a cheese burger, add a slice of cheese in the last 30 seconds of cook time.
  7. Add a bit of olive oil or butter on the other pan and toast the buns until golden brown.
  8.  To assemble the burger, add sauce of your choice on either side of the buns. Break and bend the lettuce to fit the bun, and lay it on with some slices of tomato and onion. Rest the burger on top, dress on some pickles, and put the top bun on. Secure the burger with some bamboo skewers.
  9. Serve hot with some homemade spicy potato wedges, which I will post a recipe on soon! Enjoy :)
